Exports roundup: Reyna's Dortmund fall vs Augsburg

Giovanni Reyna - holds shoulder - Dortmund-Augsburg

After a dream Bundesliga opener for NYCFC academy product Giovanni Reyna and Borussia Dortmund, Week 2 of the new German campaign brought the 17-year-old American and his teammates back to Earth in the form of a 2-0 defeat at Augsburg.

Reyna started on the left wing and played all 90 minutes a week after his first Bundesliga goal. But this time Dortmund failed to turn dominance in possession and chances into goals, while conceding on the either side of halftime on the other end.

It was Reyna's first match of the season without finding the net, having contributed in a 3-0 league opening win over Borussia Monchengladbach and a 5-0 cup victory over MSV Duisburg before that.

Former FC Dallas No. 6 Carlos Gruezo nearly went the full 90 for Augsburg, making his exit in second-half stoppage time.

Schalke 1, Werder Bremen 3

There was better news elsewhere in the Bundesliga. US men's national team striker Josh Sargent picked up his first assist of the new Bundesliga season on Saturday when he won the header leading to Niclas Fullkrug's opening goal in Werder Bremen's match away to Schalke 04.

Off a corner kick, Sargent won an aerial battle near the penalty spot and drove his header down inside the 6-yard box, where Fullkrug snapped a first-time effort past Ralf Fahrmann. Fullkrug would go on to score a hat trick in a 3-1 Bremen victory.

Sargent has started all three of Bremen's matches across all competitions in the new season. He scored for Bremen in their 2-0 Cup win over Carl Zeiss Jena back on Sept. 12.

Bayer Leverkusen 1, RB Leipzig 1

Meanwhile in Leverkusen, former New York Red Bulls prodigy Tyler Adams looks to have won his starting role back at RB Leipzig, going 90 minutes in their draw on Saturday.

After the condensed schedule to close the 2019-2020 season resulted in Adams alternating between a starting and substitute role, he's been in Julian Nagelsmann's XI for all three of Leipzig's matches in the new campaign.

Cardiff City 1, Reading 2

Canada national team veteran Junior Hoilett started for Cardiff, but exited after 74 minutes with only a booking to show for his troubles in a 2-1 loss to Reading in a League Championship fixture.

The 30-year-old midfielder has started all four matches in the new campaign for the Bluebirds, who have taken three points from nine in league play and also suffered a League Cup loss away to Northampton.

Lille 2, Nantes 0 (Friday)

Canada international Jonathan David is still searching for his first goal with his new club in Ligue 1, but he was at least in the vicinity on Lille's opening tally â€” rightly ruled an own goal â€” in a 2-0 victory home to Nantes on Friday night.

David has started all five of Lille's matches so far this season, registering six shots and three efforts on target.

The French club might've expected more immediate production from the 20-year-old, who had 18 Juliper League goals for Gent last season. But they may be able to afford more patience than most, having gone five unbeaten to open the new season.
