An independent review panel has rejected the Sporting Kansas City appeal of defender Matt Besler’s red card issued for an incident in Sunday’s matchup with the New York Red Bulls, Major League Soccer announced Thursday.
Sporting filed an appeal for review of the red card that occurred in the 70th minute.
The independent review panel, consisting of one representative from the U.S. Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and Professional Referees Organization (PRO), were not unanimous that the referee incorrectly identified the offense or that the sanction applied was incorrect.
As a result, Besler will serve a one-match suspension and will miss the team’s next match against FC Dallas on Saturday at Toyota Stadium (8:30 p.m. ET).
Per MLS policy, Sporting Kansas City will have one more unsuccessful appeal for any send-off review during the 2015 season.
