TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
UPDATE: Jan. 30, 4:32 pm EST - Nicolas Figal's signing with Inter Miami CF is now official, per a Thursday release from the club.
The center back comes to the 2020 expansion side via transfer from Club Athletico Independiente in his native Argentina, where he's made over 100 appearances across all competitions since 2014.
"Nico is just entering his prime as a player and has already shown impressive skill in defense," Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said in Thursday's release. "He showed his quality playing in Argentina, winning important international competitions and being selected as one of the best defenders in his country. We're happy to be able to bring him in and continue to sure up our back line."
Figal will join the club for preseason training pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
Inter Miami CF could be on the verge of signing Argentine center back Nicolas Figal from Independiente, according to a report out of Argentina.
TyC Sports reports the Superliga club are mulling an offer from the MLS expansion side for the 25-year-old who has worked his way into becoming a regular starter for Independiente.
Figal could be the third Argentine signed by Inter Miami, which announced 19-year-olds Matias Pellegrini and Julian Carranza as the club’s first two signings in July. Inter are reportedly negotiating with Boca Juniors for 19-year-old Agustin Almendra.
Figal, who has also featured as a right back, joined Independiente in 2014, helping the team gain promotion to the Argentine top flight. He made 16 appearances on loan for Olimpico before returning to Independiente ahead of the 2016/17 season.
The Argentine would join Roman Torres, Christian Makoun and Grant Lillard on Miami's center back depth chart.
