A pair of Americans were back in action in Europe on Tuesday, with Jesse Marsch's Red Bull Salzburg taking on Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League and Ulysses Llanez getting minutes in the KNVB Cup with Heerenveen.

Here's what happened on Tuesday.

Atletico Madrid 3, RB Salzburg 2

Former New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch continued his Champions League campaign with Red Bull Salzburg, losing in the second group game against Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

The Austrian side went down in the 29th minute when Marcos Llorente scored for the hosts, but Salzburg were able to rally back before halftime through a 40th minute equalizer from Dominik Szoboszlai. They carried that momentum into the second half and took the lead in the 47th minute through Mergim Berisha, but Joao Felix scored just five minutes later and followed up with a game-winner in the 85th minute.

The result has Salzburg in third place in the group, with one point earned in last week's draw against Lokomotiv Moscow.

SC Heerenveen 3, FC Oss 1

Winger Ulysses Llanez started the Dutch Cup game on the bench for Heerenveen, but came on in the 77th minute to help his team see out the win and advance to the second round.

Lokomotiv Moscow 1, Bayern Munich 2

Former FC Dallas academy product Chris Richards did not make the squad for Bayern Munich's latest win the Champions League, while former Vancouver Whitecaps homegrown Alphonso Davies missed the match with a ligament injury. Bayern are top of their group with six points.

Marseille 0, Manchester City 3

USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen was on the bench for his team's second win to start their Champions League campaign. Manchester City top their group with six points.
