The world lost a legend with Saturday's news that civil rights icon and Georgia congressman John Lewis had passed away at 80 after a battle with cancer.

Lewis, who served as the US representative for Georgia's 5th Congressional District for more than three decades, was one of the most respected figures of his generation for his work in the civil rights movement, for which he's been a leading figure in the non-violent struggle for equality and justice for over five decades. The values he fought for have never been more relevant as protests throughout the nation and world continue following the murder of George Floyd.

Major League Soccer released the following statement on Lewis's passing:

“Too many of us still believe our differences define us instead of the divine spark that runs through all of human creation." John Lewis – August, 2013

Major League Soccer mourns the loss of civil rights titan and longtime Congressman John Lewis, who changed the world with his grace, integrity and fierce commitment in the struggle against social injustice. We all must honor his legacy by working together to make equality a reality.
