A massive match between two teams gamely trying to get back into playoff position is ahead when New York City FC play host to the San Jose Earthquakes at Yankee Stadium on Saturday evening. NYCFC are just two points out of sixth place and the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference in their inaugural season, coming off a 2-0 home win against Toronto FC at midweek which ended a three-game losing slide. The Quakes hit the road just one point out oft he final postseason spot in the Western Conference, concluding a four-game home stand with a second consecutive draw in a 1-1 midweek result with the Montréal Impact.


  • Fatai Alashe scored his second career goal in the 1-1 draw Saturday with Seattle Sounders FC – his first since March 22, the third game of his rookie season, and on a night when Fatai Alashe bobbleheads were given out to fans attending the match at Avaya Stadium.
  • Patrick Mullins has a goal and an assist in the last two games, converting a penalty kick in NYCFC’s 2-1 defeat at FC Dallas on Saturday evening, their third consecutive loss. David Villa had converted each of NYCFC’s first five penalties; he came off at halftime of the FCD loss.
  • The teams are meeting for the first time ever.
