Gedion Zelalem may be in line for a fresh start in MLS.

After spending 2019 with Sporting Kansas City, reports link the German-born American midfielder to New York City FC.

Zelalem, 22, joined Sporting Kansas City in a March 11 transfer from English Premier League side Arsenal. His contract option wasn’t picked up by SKC at the season’s end, leaving Zelalem free to sign around MLS.

The midfielder’s SKC spell never quite panned out, as he made just nine appearances (five starts) after joining in March. Should he land at NYCFC, the former US youth international would be hoping for a career reboot after injuries derailed his promising path

NYCFC currently are the only MLS team without a manager, and Zelalem would enter a midfield that’s led by veterans Maxi Moralez and Alex Ring. As of now, Keaton Parks is not set to rejoin the club after his loan from Benfica and midfielder Ebenezer Ofori had his option declined.

Perhaps Zelalem, given the right situation, could kick his career into second gear after making the biggest impact in Kansas City on Sporting KC II, their USL Championship side.
