Sporting Kansas City have signed winger Jacob Peterson to a new contract, the club announced on Wednesday.
"I'm very happy to have re-signed with an organization as good as Sporting Kansas City," Peterson said in a club statement. "There was never really any other place that I wanted to go in this offseason, so I'm glad that we could get a deal worked out. It's also exciting to see some of the moves that have been made, most recently with bringing Roger [Espinoza] back. It shows the ambition of the club, and it is definitely a place that I am happy to remain a part of moving forward."
Peterson, who will turn 29 in January, will be entering his 10th MLS season in 2015 and his fourth with Kansas City. He has made 61 regular-season appearances, including 32 starts, over the last three seasons and helped Kansas City reach the playoffs each year. His four goals in 2012 were a career high.
"Jacob Peterson is a player we feel fits very well for us on the field and within the culture of our club," Sporting manager Peter Vermes said in the club statement. "We are thrilled to re-sign him and are looking forward to the start of pre-season later this month."
In his MLS career, Peterson has 15 goals and 14 assists in 199 regular-season appearances. A former US youth international, who played at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Peterson played for Colorado, Toronto and San Jose before joining Kansas City in 2012.
Peterson is one of two players ever to win an NCAA title (2003, 2004), Canadian Championship (2010, 2011), US Open Cup (2012) and MLS Cup (2013); Nick Garcia was the other.
Also, among players currently under contract with an MLS club, Peterson is the third youngest with at least 199 regular-season appearances, trailing Dax McCarty (216) and Corey Ashe (211).
