The teams have met every year in the Canadian Championship, the Impact earlier this year advancing in a semifinal encounter. TFC come into the game after having their three-game league winning streak put to an end in a 2-0 home loss to New York City FC last weekend, while the Impact rebounded for a 2-0 win against Orlando City SC at Stade Saputo.
