Transfer Watch: German defender changing his Red Bulls?

Tim Sebastian, reportedly a transfer target for New York Red Bulls - December 2015

The New York Red Bulls are being linked with an overseas signing, and if it's true, it would jibe with their switch from a superstar-driven approach to a value-centric mindset.

Veteran German defender Tim Sebastian helped RBNY's sister club, RB Leipzig, make a rapid climb from regional-league obscurity to the 2.Bundesliga over the past few years, even serving as team captain at one point, and now he's reportedly set to swap one Red Bull Arena for another.

Multiple German outlets claim that Sebastian, 31, is bound for MLS in the new year, having found himself a fringe member of Leipzig's squad in recent months – though manager Ralf Rangnick apparently recently praised his professionalism, noting his “exemplary behavior” despite playing only six games this season.

Currently occupying first place in the second division, the East German club is on track for yet another promotion, this time to the big Bundesliga show itself. But Sebastian, a local product, is apparently ready to try something new as he approaches the end of his contract.

Sebastian could provide useful depth for a New York Red Bulls club reportedly facing heated overseas transfer interest for standout defenders Matt Miazga and Kemar Lawrence.
