Vancouver Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Bryan Meredith has departed Orlando to return home after the sudden passing of his mother Beth on Tuesday.

"Sadly, Bryan Meredith’s mother Beth passed away on Tuesday morning suddenly and unexpectedly," the club said in a statement. "He has returned home to be with his family in New Jersey. Staff and players will wear a black armband with B.M. (Beth Meredith)."

Prior to Vancouver's match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, Whitecaps defender Jake Nerwinski took the field holding Meredith's jersey with Beth Meredith written under the number.

"We wanted to win this one for Bryan and his mom, that’s why we wore those armbands today," midfielder Russell Teibert said after Wednesday's match. "I think we showed how much we wanted it by the heart that we played with."
