Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Simon Colyn has joined Italian Serie B side S.P.A.L. on a two-week trial for the club's youth teams, the Whitecaps announced on Friday.

“This is a great opportunity for Simon,” Whitecaps sporting director and CEO Axel Schuster said in a statement. “Last year Simon was able to spend time training with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, and now he has a chance to test himself with this trial in Italy.”

Colyn, 18, joined the Whitecaps academy in 2016 and was signed to the first team as a Homegrown player in April 2018. He made his MLS debut near the end of the 2018 regular season, which remains his only first-team appearance, and spent the majority of 2019 and 2020 training with the first team will playing games with Vancouver's Development Squad and U-19s.

Colyn also featured for Canada at the U-15 and U-17 levels, scoring one goal in four appearances for the U-17s.
