Reyna omitted from squad after rule breach

Yordy Reyna was left out of the Vancouver Whitecaps' matchday squad for the Week 6 match at Toronto FC after reporting late.

The Peruvian was due to start on the bench for the Whitecaps, but sporting director Axel Schuster told TSN that "there are ramifications when standards are not met." It was reportedly not the first time that Reyna has turned up late for team activities.

The Whitecaps went into the August 21 match looking to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat to Toronto last week. Reyna got the start in that game before being substituted in the 67th minute. The 26-year-old has one goal and one assist in five regular-season appearances in 2020.

“Yes it was a one-off today because he has to understand that we have rules inside the locker room and those rules are important," manager Marc Dos Santos said following the match after a 1-0 loss. "But it’s not a big drama or soap opera. It was a situation that happened, and we just want to move forward. He knows about it, he knows what happened, he knows what we were not happy with, and at the end of the day with these rules you have to think about the team all the time and you have to respect everything around the team. That’s all.”
